Wachusett Mountain – Nice hike for a sunny winter day

March-16-2023 – 2 to 3 hrs – Dogs permitted on leashes

Wachusett Mountain is located one hour east from Boston. The Mountain has a small skiing resort and few hikes to reach the summit.

Hike description

This is a moderate hike of about 6miles (9.6km) and 1300ft (400m) of elevation. The hike is on well maintained trail in the forest. There is no specific difficulties during summer and some area can be slippery during winter. So pack your spikes during winter and use pants during summer. At the summit you have a large sunny open area with a nice view on the surrounding area. (This area is also often windy).

On your way to the submit you will be able to see Balance Rock, and during winter you will see few ice formation.

Hike direction

We usually park at the 2nd parking and walk a little bit on the road. We then go South West using the Bolton Pond trail. The trail then go south west with some elevation to reach Balance Rock. From Balance Rock continue south on the Semuhenna trail. After that take the Link Trail and the Mountain House Trail which go North to the summit. The Summit area has multiple trails so check your map to avoid choosing the wrong one. (check our map below to see the trace)

Going down we use the same trail. The only change is that at Balance Rock we go in the direction of the ski resort. In the ski resort you can find rest room and accommodation.

Multiple itinerary are possible, as example AllTrails proposes this one.

You can pair this hike with Wachusett Brewing Company which is few minutes north, or River Styx Brewery in Fitchburg.
