Castle Island – Sea Port hike – great hike in Boston
March-11-2023
This great hike goes around South Boston, from Carson beach to Castle Island and Sea Port. It’s certainly one of the best hike in Boston after the Freedom trail.
What to see
This hike is along the beach and the ocean it offer a good mix of view over Boston Harbor island and Boston city buildings. The parts that we like the most are:
- Castle Island: The Fort Independence and the view of the boat using the Boston Main Channel.
- The loop around Pleasure Bay: Offer some nice views of the port containers and Boston buildings
- The Fan Pier Park in sea port: Iconic view of Boston city center
Hike description
This is an easy 7miles (11km) hike or walk on paved road across two stops of the Red line. It can be done at any time of the year, we especially enjoy Pleasure Bay during a cold sunny day.
Hike direction
Multiple options are available for this hike:
- The version proposed on the Map is best done using the Red line: Stop at JFK/UMass, go north east along the coast up to Castle Island. From this point head west toward south bay, and then north in Summer st to arrive in Sea Port. In Sea Port don’t miss the Fan Pier Park, then head south west to South Station to get back on the Red line.
- Other versions are available, as example if you are driving you can skip the south part: just park in Pleasure Bay, walk to Sea Port and back.
Activities around
We usually do this hike to arrive at Sea Port around noon and enjoy some of the best breweries: For the best beer go to Trillium Fort Point, for great pretzel and cool taproom go to Harpoon Brewery Boston.
