Blue Hills

Blue Hills – Very convenient hike around Boston

Around Boston: about 30min south from Boston

Blue Hills is a reservation located south from Boston. This is the most convenient location if you want to have a little bit of elevation in your hike without a lot of driving. It’s also located very close to some of the best breweries.

Hike description

The name of Blue Hills is very accurate (at least for the “Hills” part). Meaning that you will not find mountains but a succession of hills. Most of the hike is inside the forest but you can find viewpoints at the top of some of the hills. We usually do a loop moderately difficult with 10km and about 500m of elevation. This loop has an “8” shape and can be stopped in the middle. There are a lot of different trails in Blue Hills so you can adjust the hike difficulty to your level.

There are nothing amazing to see in Blue Hills. It’s a cool hike in the forest with few view points. You can see some animals like birds or deer. (or go at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum to be sure to see them). The hike can be great during winter when you have snow or ice, just be sure to have your spikes.

Hike direction

Our usual 10km / 500m loop starts from Houghton’s Pond where you can find parking. We 1st go north to Houghton Hill, then go west to  Eliot Tower. From Eliot Tower, we go east using the North Skyline trail until Buck Hill. We then go back to Houghton’s Pond by going south and then west. There are a lot of trails so it’s easy to be a little bit disoriented the first time. The Alltrails reference for the loop described is a combination of 2 trails: the Great Blue Hill via Skyline Trail and the Buck hill via Skyline loop. Or you can check our map Hike Blue Hills. If you are looking for restrooms you should find some at Houghton Pond and Blue Hills Reservation Headquarters.

Activities around

We usually do this hike to enjoy a nice beer at Trillium Canton or Widowmaker Brewing.
